Donate Body to Science. Check.
When seventeen-year-old Kaitlyn checked the box, she never suspected she’d have her life–and her body–stolen from her. She awakens one day in a secret laboratory to discover that her body is now half-robot and is forced to hide her own secret: that she still has human emotions and a human mind. If the scientists who made her find out, they’ll erase what remains of who she was.Freak of Nature was a disappointing read for me. I went into it expecting the cyborg girl, Kate, to have some awesome insights and to have real, actual feelings. And while it does say that Kate has feelings, well, I never felt them. She goes about everything so robotically that it was hard to see anything else. She approaches everything as if it's a chore. Which, let's face it, sucks.
Kaitlyn finds an unlikely ally in Lucas, a handsome, brilliant scientist who can’t get over the guilt he feels knowing she was once a vibrant, beautiful young woman. He never expected a science project to affect him the way she does. As he tries to help her rediscover her past, he finds himself falling for the brave girl struggling to find her place and acceptance between the human and computer worlds.
I couldn't connect with her on any level, and most of the time her character just confused me. I had no idea where some of her logic came from, and her narration was spotty at best. I was often left wondering how and why I got from one place to the other. Sometimes it was so bad that I went back and re-read, only to still not understand what had happened.
But let's talk about what really got me on this one-- the romance. There was absolutely no build up. It happened pretty dang instantaneously, and to make matters worse, the guy says that it "happened gradually" which was completely untrue. It happened three to five chapters in. It was really hard for me to believe that they even liked each other, and I saw no chemistry in their interactions. No spark.
Nothing, nada, zilch-- I didn't understand the idea that they were in love-- I never really felt it from either of them. Their kisses just felt like a meeting of parts, and don't even get me started on them having sex. O.o
All in all, Freak of Nature just didn't work out for me. I found it hard to believe that Kate as a cyborg had feelings, and I also felt that it all fell into place way too easily. Let's get real, in a top secret area like that; it would be a lot harder to get a new job or escape. (That does not mean what you think it does.)
There is nothing worse than characters claiming their love built slowly when really it just smacks the reader in the face out of nowhere. I'm not big on the robot/cybog thing so I probably wouldnt have read this but now I deff know not to. Thanks for the honest review!
ReplyDeleteTeresa @ Readers Live A Thousand Lives
I know, right? That's like one of my top pet peeves! I think that robot/cyborgs are interesting, but they're rarely done to my taste. Thanks for reading it, Teresa! :)
ReplyDeleteYikes. This book sounds pretty awful. I hate the insta-love thing unless it's really done well. In some books it is, but obviously not in this one. Also, I really do not like that cover. But great review. Now I know to stay away from this one.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but the cover is what really put me off from ever reading this book. I'm shallow like that.
ReplyDelete"Their kisses just felt like a meeting of parts" <-- I don't know why, but I just found your wording here absolutely beautiful, which is funny because what you're talking about is not so much.
As you know real well by now, I have insta love (and I hate when the characters seem oblivious to the fact it came out of nowhere and they know nothing about each other), so I think I'll continue to steer clear from this book. I'm just sad you didn't enjoy it :(
Gah. I didn't like it - insta love is almost always a turn-off for me, but there are the occasional exceptions. :) I don't particularly care for the cover either - ugh. Thanks! ;D
ReplyDeleteI tend to be shallow like that, but I heard such good things about this one! Obviously I'm wrong.
ReplyDeleteHaha, well I'm glad that you appreciate my verbal stylings. ;P
I do know that really well by now! :P GAH that's like an ultimate pet peeve. Well, if it makes you feel better - I don't think it's something that you would like! I'm sad that I didn't like it too. :(
I read this, and i enjoyed it for the most part, but I'll be honest the romance... wtf was that? it freaked me out when they had sex too. Just... whaat? o.O i give it 3 stars at best because the concept intrigued me, yet because of the romance and the ending, I couldn't give it any higher.. disappointed is an understatement.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why, but I still tend to be quite wary for a book with a cover I despise/turns me off. Like Hush, Hush - I really didn't like the cover, but I heard good things so... Should've listened to my guts!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your verbal styling, not just appreciate ;)
