Emerson Taylor, a 16-year-old lip gloss addict with a secret gift: she can read the mind of anyone who kisses her. Though puckering up with brainy boys to get test answers helps her grades, a scholarship competition and a new crush compel Emerson to stifle her gift and study the honest – if old-fashioned – way. With support from her family, including her aunt/guardian who is in the cosmetics business, Emerson discovers that true beauty always wins out.
Kiss and Make-Up was a fun read for me, but I expected more of it. I expected it to be about Emerson dealing with her mind reading and finding love along the way, but it seems that just wasn't in the cards for this one. First off, Emerson never really deals with her problems. It seems like all she really does is find ways around them. Bad grades? No problem. Just kiss answers out of the brainy boys. Her personality was nice, she was a funny girl and all, but I just couldn't get past the cheating.

At first I thought that she was going to have a ton of common sense, but well, that idea was a bust. She didn't even have the common sense not to cheat. And I don't only mean on tests, people. She may not of liked what she was doing, but that doesn't change the fact that she did it anyway.

Speaking of which, I didn't really feel the love between Emerson and the boy she's interested in. It honestly seems like they're "in love" way before they even get to know each other. The feelings between them just weren't developed enough, which was a bit of a disappointment.

All in all, Kiss and Make-Up just didn't live up to the standards that I'd set for it.

  1. Seriously?Kissing random guys just to cheat on exams? The whole concept sounds wrong.
    Cute cover though.

  2. Hahahaha, okay that is hilarious.:D I wish I could do that back in high school.:)

  3. Oh, you're like me! Any mention of cheating and tests and *strike three, you're out* LOL I am such a serious person when it comes to things like this. It's why I hated Patch almost instantly - he didn't care that he might make Nora fail her assignment! He almost tried to do it on purpose!!

Ohh, I hate when relationships don't make you believe in their love. And I especially hate when people "fall in love" without even knowing anything about the other person *insta love to be burned at the stake!*

I feel so sad that all your recent reads are a bust, Mags! (or recent reads on the blog, anyway. I know you're way ahead *wink*)

  4. Well, I kind of don't. LOL. I think it would freak me out!

  5. Yes. The entire concept is wrong, in my eyes. It is, isn't it? ;)

  6. Hahaha, I don't really do that, but I don't particularly like cheating in books. This explains so much... :P I love how every one of our conversations comes back to Patch! It's our recurring theme! :D

*witch trials for insta-love* I just don't think that it's plausible to fall in love with someone while you know nothing about them. I would hope that you'd know something before you jumped in!

Hahaha I am way ahead, so most of my recent reads are pretty good. I go through phases. Also, I switch reviews around sometimes, depending on the publication date of the book. ;P

  7. Oh my, you're such a speedy reader! I swear every time I come on your blog you've finish another book! *very impressed* :P

But damn, seems like you're not having a very good streak with the books you're reading though. :( That sucks! To be honest, Emerson sounded like a boy's name so it was weird trying to get my head around the fact that she's a very girly-girl. And the cheating is a big no-no for me, the fact that she can't even control herself not to cheat shows she has no self-control and clearly not a character I can relate to!

Thanks for the awesome review Megan! xx

  8. LOL. I'm way ahead right now - I swear, it's been about a month since I read this. ;P

I wasn't for a while, but I think I may be over that now - it's great! :D Yes, Emerson does sound like a boy's name! It honestly kind of bothers me when girls have boy names... I don't know why. Yeah, I couldn't really relate to her either. LOL.

    You're welcome, sweetie!

  9. I think Patch will forever remain the middle of our conversations.... at least until I find a new male character to hate on xD Though, so far, his place in the 'most hated' top seems secure enough.

I agree with you. I definitely believe in insta-attraction, or lust, or even crush (like when you see a hot guy at the train station and you're all like 'I wouldn't mind that guy'. I have such a guy, that I pretty much come back to every one in a while, sighing at how hot he was and how I wish he would've set down next to me xD) BUT I don't believe in insta love. I think you need to know about the other person to love him - though, I have friend who fell in love in two weeks, and she and the guy are still going very very strong (you can actually read her story on my blog, here - http://drugscalledbooks.blogspot.co.il/2013/08/forgiving-insta-love.html)

  10. Definitely. I think he was the thing that made us friends - just so we could argue about him. :P Are there more male characters for you to hate? We could go in search of one! :P He's secure. Very secure. Like Nora on the Falling Angel thing secure. LOL

Hahaha I completely do that, minus the train station. THAT STORY IS SO ADORABLE. But you're right (about that thing near the end) if it was a book I probably wouldn't have liked it. Also, I'd never seen that post before - so thanks for sharing it with me! :)

  11. I'd like to think we were friends before I read about him, too xDDDD

Actually, I can't think of another I hated as much as Patch Oo But there are a few others I hate, too. I actually kind of hope I'll never find a male character I hate more than Patch XD

You're welcome :) I love that story as well! I was, like, so jealous when I heard it xD

  12. Of course! Just not as good as we are now. :)

REALLY? I would have figured that there were at least a couple others. :P But this is a good thing, right?

Teehee. I'm kind of jealous of it too! But I'm pretty stubborn so I'd probably never give him a chance. I'm not choice material for that kind of story. :P

  13. Well, I bet there were a few I hated, too, but they just didn't stick with me enough I guess? Dare me to go through my books and suddenly a few will pop, I'm sure, but at the top of my head... *shrug* I like it better this way - that way I only have my book boyfriends with me :3

Ohh, she's way stubborn, too, but I guess something about him just... disarmed her. It's lovely to see. I wish I had that kind of love in my life (or any kind of love. I adore my book boyfriends, but I can't really introduce them to my folks).

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well, that's actually a plus. There are few book characters that I really remember for very long after reading them - so... it's quite a feat. Hee hee. That sounds nice. ;)

It does sound very lovely! (you could, but it would be slightly weird.)

  15. But only a tiny, tinsy bit. LOL
I think that could be a great comedian act. Actually, I might write a scene like that!! That'd be cool to be. And funny. Ohh, now I'm hyped out! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  16. LOL. It actually would be. "I mean, I want to introduce you all to my guy. Like, shake his book hand y'all. Don't pretend like you don't see him! He's right here! *shakes book at them*"

AWWWW so sweet of you! I've looked for your button before... but do you not have one?

  17. I was thinking more along the lines of telling your parents ALL about the guy, and how amazing he is, and inviting them to dinner... and then in the dinner chair sits a book. *DUN DUN DUN*

I don't. I have no idea how to make a button or add the code needed beneath it. And as I'm not a huge button person (I don't grab many buttons), I didn't think it was that important.
