This book was a lot darker than I anticipated, and I haven't yet decided whether I loved it's darkness or just tolerated it. For Colasanti, this was REALLY dark. I rarely think that her book's are dark-- she writes about hard subjects, but she tends to do it in a lighter way. But this one was dark, and it had me kind of depressed for a bit.

The title is absolutely PERFECT for this book. Noelle just had to keep holding on-- even when her mom wouldn't buy any food, or when she got made fun of and violently tortured in school, even when all of her clothes were dirty, and one of her "acquaintances" committed suicide. She kept holding on. But sometimes I really wondered why. Her life was so awful, and I don't understand how she just kept pulling herself back. She seemed like the type to just pop one off, and leave the world with a bang. She just seemed like the type, you know what I mean?

I wish that we could've seen a little more backstory on all of the characters, and that the characters just could have gotten more development overall. They needed it-- they desperately needed it. Maybe I need a few more pages to get better acquainted with a character, but hey. I'm a sucker for good characters. The story could suck, but if the characters are good I'll be sold.

I honestly don't have very much to say about this one. I liked it, but I didn't love it, and I'm sure that my review reflects that. If I'd had a little more time to get into the story, a few more pages to get to know the characters, I might have liked it more. But as is, it was mediocre.

The 2013 SARC

I'm participating in the Standalone Reading Challenge again this year, because I really, really, really love standalones. I don't have to explain why, do I? Fine. If I must. It's because in a standalone, all the loose ends and all of the pieces are wrapped up and put together by the end of the book, and I don't have to wait A YEAR for the sequel. Love that. Anywho, I'm going to try and read 15 Standalone novels this year, and maybe get through my big aspirations. ;)

YA Contemporary Wrap-up

Yep, you read that right. Heartbreak River by Tricia Mills

Hailey Abbott's Summer Boys takes a weepy turn in this story of one girl's attempt to tell her childhood friend how she really feels about him.

Alex thought she'd be spending the summer focused on her family's rafting business, burying the memories of her father's death last year, and leaving behind all the messes she made in its wake.

But when Sean returns to town, she is forced to reckon with her mixed-up crushy feelings for him - more powerful than ever before. It takes another tragedy to make Alex realize Sean has loved her, and forgiven her, all along.

Heartbreak River isn't as heartbreaking as the title makes it sound-- it was actually a lot more CUTE than HEART-BREAKING. Note the differences in the descriptive terms I have used-- I just want y'all to know that I enjoyed this one, and I'll probably read it again, but I honestly don't feel heartbroken by it. I just think that it was adorable.

That's all. It was as cute a romance as they come, with enough backstory to make it believable, and an identifiable main character, but I feel that it could have been better. Not much, but maybe a little. A little less melodramatic's would have been nice. A bit more character development on the secondaries, and a little more romance before the end.

That's all I ask-- for a little more romance. You know me, I love a good love story! (Was ever a more cliche line spoken?)

To be honest with you, I was absolutely rooting for a secondary character throughout most of the book. I mean, how could I not fall for the quiet southern guy? I loved Daniel! He was really awesome, and I wish that he had played a bigger part in the story. Had more speaking parts, whatever. I liked him. But I also liked Tommy, idiot that he was. And Sean. I mean, there was no shortage of guys to like in this book.

BUT there was a shortage of girls. Four girls throughout THE ENTIRE BOOK. I feel like taking offense today, so I will. Why were there only four girl characters? That's all I really wanna know.

Win. Can it seriously get any better than reading a super smexi, awesomesauce romance on the day after Christmas, AND ON A SNOW DAY? I don't think it can, LOL. This has nothing to do with my review...moving on, so that I can run back and read the sneak peek of Dare You to. 

First off, I gotta say that I wasn't very sure about this when I started--it's been getting so many good reviews that it had me nervous, because (usually) nothing with hype is actually good for me. I roll differently, I guess. But this book totally exceeded my expectations. My only problem? THAT IT ENDED. I mean, seriously. I could've read FOREVER.

I mean, NOAH. SA-WOON. I can't exactly emphasize that enough, because, hello? He's too sweet-slash-badass. (I'm sorry! I think that he totally deserves those terms to describe him, so whatever. Deal. Sorry.) But he's just got so many problems, and so does Echo, and they're totally perfect for each other...SWOON. I completely love their chemistry together, and I definitely could've read a few hundred pages more...

I also liked the little side thing going on with Beth and Isaiah...I wonder how that will all work out. I just kind of liked everything about this, but the ending...I don't know. It just kind left me a bit confused, and totally dying to get my hands on the next one.

This book is told through two different points of view--which I usually find annoying, because it seems like a lot of authors have trouble switching between points of view, then the characters all sound the same. But I'm happy to tell you that Katie doesn't have that problem (yes, we're on first name terms. So shoot me for fangirling). Unfortunately, though, I can't pick a favorite character. All the characters are my favorites--how's that?

All in all, I just loved it. Simple as that.
   

Beth had been both wrong and right. Echo couldn't hurt anyone, especially when she seemed so breakable herself. But the need I felt to be the one to keep the world from shattering her only confirmed Beth's theory. I was falling for her and I was fucked. ~ Pg. 102

Time Between Us by Tamara Ireland Stone

I think that there's something to be said about time travel books: they can be a bit confusing, what with all the jumping around in time. I clearly consider myself an expert after reading a couple of them, but the others that I've read actually haven't been all that great. I would name names, but I'm not like that. So, you should know that this one isn't all that confusing. Whenever Bennett and Anna would jump, I could keep up. Until the last few pages.

The last few pages presented a problem for me...they were a bit too abrupt. I was absolutely shocked at what happened--I was seriously about to accept a very sad thought as the ending, do my crying, and then let people know that the ending was pretty much genius in it's sadness. But honestly, it had a happier ending than I expected, but that was the moment that this book entered the realm of slightly cliched.

Before the ending, it was so brilliant. The ending would've been amazing, and honestly, I don't know why I'm pushing this. I liked the ending an all, but the author had the chance to make this book absolutely terrific, and she didn't take it. I don't blame her, but I would have liked it better sad.

Okay, I have GOT to move on. Quite honestly, I don't know why I can't, because I love contemporary, and it had an ending that would make a contemp proud, but...sigh. The characters were absolutely amazing, though! I loved them. Anna and Bennett had very good chemistry, and their scenes together just flowed, so I can totally dig that.

All in all, I was way too attached to these characters, so it totally skewed my view on this book. The characters were so awesome, but the ending was cliched. These two things war with each other.

Has anything changed? He blew into our lives and back out again, and on the surface, maybe it looks like he didn't leave any marks, but I know he did: they're all over me. And as painful as it is to be in this town without him, if I could do the last three months again, I'd make the same choice--to know Bennett Cooper. Even though it kills me when the song ends with the words I'll end up alone like I began. ~ Pg. 358

There are a few dozen fellow daydreamers who share his fate. There is plump, bespectacled Will, pretty brunette Kelly, and the rebellious outcast Paulo. Presiding over them all is the enigmatic Ganymede, and irascible vagrant who distributes food to his dependents and sets them perverse tasks to perform in return.

Alex soon finds that he has rare skills in Intersticia. Most uniquely he can affect the motionless world of 'Statica' around them. He can open doors, help himself to food, and move objects. But this forbidden activity soon sets him on a collision course with Ganymede in which the very existence of Intersticia is put at risk.

Okay, that was totally awesome. Seriously. When I started this book, I wasn't sure what to expect, because it seemed like it might be some kind of odd science fiction. But when I got about thirty pages in, I realized that it is nothing like what I first assumed.

For one, it's more of a modern day fantasy novel. Every bit of this book just screams fantasy, but not in a (as my dad would say) unicorns and rainbow farts kind of way. It definitely presents it in a more modern, less dragon-y kind of way, and I honestly enjoyed it. Thankfully, it wasn't a fantasy where none of the words made sense--the author took the time to make us mere mortals understand it.

All of the characters were well developed, and the plot was very good. The writing was good too--it seemed very descriptive, and I really could imagine every bit of the story, and the progression. It was just a bit hard to hold onto the idea of a fantasy world, though, no matter how well written it was. It was just a bit confusing, but not enough to take away from the story.

Back to the characters--I liked the character of Alex quite a bit. He seemed like a nice guy, and I kind of like reading about guy main characters once in a while. For instance, while I was reading this book, I started thinking about how there are so very few books that appeal to boys out there, and I think that this one would. It would actually probably appeal to boys more than girls, honestly.

All in all, Caught in a Moment was a very imaginative debut that really makes you think differently about fantasy as a genre.

Author Bio:

The urge to write first struck when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter's editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.

Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. He paused to raise two sons and pursue a career, in the process becoming a well-known entrepreneur in the software industry, founding several successful companies. When he found time again to daydream, the urge to write returned. There Comes a Prophet is his first novel in this new stage of life.

David and his wife split their time between Cape Cod, Florida and anywhere else that catches their fancy. He no longer limits himself to five pages a day and is thankful every keystroke for the invention of the word processor.

Hi! If you just read the awesome title and got really interested so you started reading this post...WELCOME! I'm Inky from Book Haven Extraordinaire, and I'm here to hiback Megan's blog. WHY? Once Upon A Time..............

There was a girl named Megan. She was very young, but she had her priorities straight, for a toddler. Books and Candy. No more, no less.

As she grew older she found ways of expressing herself....

.....And as it turned out, this wasn't the best approach, so she tried other tactics......

....Till she discovered reviewing...which kept her reading. She learned many things, and journeyed many adventures. She learned what it means to fall in love with someone.....in a book.

 ...........She appreciates the spiritual depth of pie......

.......and Lord of the Rings........

.....When to party it out........

.......and she even developed her own sense of style.........

..........Until she grew into this...............

........and though she'd never admit it, all along she knows she has a side of McGonagal....

....................and that is the story of why Megan Rocks.... 

Trust me. a lot of it was made up to fit all the awesome gifs, but it doesn't change the fact that Megan is one smoking HOT Book Babe. :D She loves what she does and she's a huge chatterbox. She's friendly to everyone and even runs her own tours! She is one amazing bloggy friend....

And even though I wrote this at 12 in the morning, I still think you are just as amazing, even if I could never express it as eloquently as I want. Tehe.  But seriously guys, Megan is worth every comment, every tweet, every email. Make sure you all send your birthday greetings to this lovely lady...or else the ghost of Inky-Hijack's-Past will haunt you. ;P
